The Final Four is set! We went from a Sweet 16 full of obvious picks to a group of four teams that seems as unlikely as Hamilton winning the Luwak Cup this year. (zing!) Here we stand with no Duke, no UNC, no Kentucky, no Gonzaga… and a whole lot of guys who will be wearing NBA uniforms next season.
The takedown of the basketball giants shook up our brackets, making way for the ascent of Chargin’ Chip Rose, representing … you guessed it … UMBC. Those Retrievers are earning their True Grit moniker this year, as one player after the next makes a run at the top spot. If you listen closely, you can hear the sound of John Fritz pouring the concrete foundation for the new “Hall of Luwak Dominance,” which will be conveniently located between the “Kopi Café” and the men’s room.
No need to lose hope yet though. There are still 23 players who picked Virginia to win it all, leaving plenty of room for scoring in the final rounds. Two have Michigan State, but an Auburn-Texas Tech matchup somehow didn’t land on too many brackets.
As for the rest of us, look out for Cornell’s Lauren Coffey, clearly the most appropriately-named player in this pool, as she is making her run at the top. Amherst is making a case for the most evenly distributed team as they have players sprinkled throughout the standings. Denison has clearly decided to go for a lottery pick in next year’s contest. They may not win the championship, but they’re winning a fun time.
Here’s to a great week everybody. Go out there and do some good.
Back to you in the next rounds.
